![]() There are a variety of campsite options, from the sand, to the dunes, tucked within some shrubs, and then there are sites closer to the road that are more grass and some cement. You can see wild horses, especially in the early morning hours. Once the sun goes down, you can relax with a campfire and look up at the stars. The only downside is the flies, but that is no fault of the national park. Have camped here in the early and late summer in the oceanside campsites, love to stay here, great view, waking up to the ocean sunrise, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves. About $25/night for camping and $15/car entrance fee good for 7 consecutive days (free with $80 annual national park pass or with $30 Assateague Island National Seashore annual park pass, I believe).Ī great campground on the beach, close to Ocean City, MD. ![]() 1 car per campsite allowed in the walk-to parking area. :) Also, 3 tents per campsite allowed and 6 people. Bring long stakes for sand, be prepared for wind for tents, keep your food tightly put away at all times (roaming horses), enjoy the amazing starry skies when clear (especially if you're coming near a meteor shower!), and RELAX AND ENJOY!! Even with the vicious mosquitoes, we're keeping this an annual tradition and keep growing our group. You can also enjoy trails, bike canoe and kayak rentals, etc. I love the easy access to the ocean and the bay (sunrise and sunset views without leaving the park!). We often come back with everyone looking like they have chicken pox from all the bites and a few who accidentally fall asleep in the sun/underestimate the power of the sun, etc. Apply often, we'll in advance of dusk, and bring antimicrobial relief. We get bit all over and have to buy spray with deep to be more effective. As others note, the 1 downside are the extremely vicious mosquitoes. Reserve exactly 6 months in advance at 10am to get the sites you want and before it sells out! I always go for the less buggy oceanside sites and like the more natural feel and privacy of the walk-to campsites (though hauling all our gear to/from the car and to/from the campsites can be long, hard, and tiring. I used to go to the state park next door, but now as an adult I make a point to go at least once a year for a weekend trip in July or August with a bunch of friends here at the cheaper national park next door (plus they allow alcohol unlike the state park which my friends like). These camp sites are large, so grab all your friends and take a nice week away from it all at the beach.Ever since I've been a child, camping at Assateague has been a must. Aside for those few negative aspects I still had a great trip and the food in Maryland is insanely good. Even more disappointing was that both the people at Assateague Outfitters and the park rangers at the information center couldn't recommend another kayak rental company in the area, even though we found one just by chance five minutes outside of the park. It is also worth noting that there is practically no cell phone service on the beach, so if you are looking for a vacation to really disconnect from your everyday, this is the place for you! We visited in May, just before the start of the summer season, and were disappointed not to be able to rent Kayaks from Assateague Outfitters on the bay-side of the park. I also found it annoying there wasn't a public WiFi network to connect to at the visitor's center, which I am sure has internet service. If they would just add a few shower stalls to the visitor's center bathrooms this would be a much better campground. The visitors center has flush toilets and a gift shop with some awesome horse-themed souvenirs. ![]() I just can't take cold showers, even when it is very warm outside. Honestly, this review would have been five stars if the facilities were a little better I could make do with the toilets, they were pretty clean overall, it was the lack of hot water for the showers that got me. At the campsites there are 2 chemical toilets (porta potty outhouses) and 2 shower stalls, as well as a spigot for water. I did see the wild horses in different areas of the campground and on the beach, which was pretty cool. The campsites are nicely spaced out and come with a fire pit and picnic table with cabinet to store food away from the horses. We went camping here and had a great time.
